How to Break in a Softball Glove
If you have recently gotten a new softball glove, then chances are that you feel the need to break it in a little bit. The leather on some gloves, especially more expensive ones, is usually fairly supple and soft, but it will still need some breaking in to get it to feel just the way you want it. If you purchased a less expensive glove which is typically made from a stiffer grade of leather, then it will take you longer to break in the glove to get it to feel just the way you want it.
There are a number of suggested ways to break in gloves and some work better for some people or for some gloves than others, so the best thing to do is to take a look at a list of recommendations for breaking in a glove (like this one) and then go through a few of the steps to see which one helps get your glove in the condition you want it to be in.
The best way to break in any glove, whether the leather is soft and pliable, or even if it is stiffer, is to put it on your hand and just get out and start using it. Of course, you’re probably not ready to use a brand new glove during a game yet, but put the glove on, get outside and have a catch with someone. The more you use it for catching a ball, the more the leather will start to soften and break in.
If you find that the glove is really stiff, or you want to help the breaking in process a little and just can’t be outside constantly throwing a ball, another good idea is to put a small amount of leather conditioner on the glove, rub it in all around, especially in the palm of the glove and around the fingers and laces, and then put a softball in the pocket of the glove and wrap the glove tightly around the ball. You can use a bungee cord, a very strong and large rubber band, or even a piece of pre-wrap from your hair to keep the ball snugly encased within the palm of the glove. You should do this every night after you get out and have a catch with the ball to break in the pocket of the ball even while you’re sleeping.
Another method, although some will doubt whether you should do this or not, is to take the glove wrapped around the softball and put it under your mattress while you sleep. The weight of this may help expedite the softening process, but it may make it uncomfortable for you to sleep. Some people also suggest running a car over the glove, but you risk ruining the glove by doing that, so it is generally not a recommended practice.
There are other methods that have been suggested throughout the years to soften up softball gloves, but the most tried and true method and the one that really works the best is to just get outside and keep using it as much as possible. The more the softball hits the pocket of the ball, the more the leather will break in and the more the pocket will be just the way you want it.
